Difference between Class 1 and Class 2
Class 1 ductless fume hoods provide an additional safety reserve and are suitable for sensitive or critical environments, including cleanrooms and pharmaceutical or food-production facilities. Class 2 is intended for general laboratory work, schools, research and routine applications.
| Feature | Class 1 | Class 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon filters | Two identical filters per filtration column, including one reserve filter | One activated-carbon filter per filtration column |
| Filter monitoring | Automatic saturation detection is mandatory | Sampling-based checking; alarm after every 60 operating hours |
| Maximum release | Maximum 1% of the exposure limit | Maximum 50% of the occupational exposure limit |
| Typical application | Critical and sensitive processes | Schools, general laboratories and routine work |
-
Both classes require continuous ventilation monitoring and an air velocity of 0.4-0.6 m/s.
-
Class 1 requires an automatic chemical sensor selected for the substances being handled.
-
A Class 2 model must be selected for particle-only filtration using a HEPA filter.
-
Activated-carbon and HEPA filters must be selected according to the chemicals or particles being handled.
